What do you kow about Industrial Heating?

There may be a large amount of information regarding your industrial heating that you may be unaware of. This article outlines some of the points that you not have even considered.

Did you know? That you can reduce your energy usage by setting your thermostats to optimum start and finish times.

Setting your timers to the appropriate temperatures and correct operating hours. If staff enter the workplace and it is cold then they may turn the heating up to full, and this may increase the energy used, to heat the building up, so it may be a good idea to set the temperature to warm up the building before the workers arrive. This could also contribute to the prevention of your pipework freezing in the colder weather.

Did you know? That heating costs rise by approx. 8% for each 1 degree of overheating?

This is why it is so important to ensure that you and all of you staff are trained on the usage of the heating controls and the temperatures in which they need to be set at. There are a variety of energy saving controls available to assist you with reducing your energy usage.

Did you know? That you can provide spot heating to particular parts of your building, where heat is required, using energy efficient radiant heaters. This allows you to control where the heat in your building is distributed should you have mixed temperature requirements.

Did you know? that you can recirculate your heated air back to ground level, reducing heat loss through the ceiling?

For example if you are attempting heat a church that has extremely high ceilings using warm air heaters, you would need to push the heated air back down towards ground level, to provide the heat where it's needed.

Did you know? that the minimum temperature within the workplace is 16 degrees and for sedentary work this could be increased to 20 degrees, although some working environments, may be exempt from this for example if you work with chilled foods, where appropriate measures such as PPE would be put into place to keep you warm in colder temperatures

Did you know? that the amount of window space in your building can affect the type of heating you need?

This is because that 26% of your buildings heat loss is through the windows. Double or Triple glazing could reduce this, but will not eradicate it completely. That's why before you consider a new heating installation a thorough heat loss calculation, can be carried out to help you to understand the heating requirements for your building.

But did you know? That Heaters Wholesale can provide you with solutions and advice on all of the above situations, to assist with maintaining the efficiency and comfort of your business. We can provide you with a free site survey to determine the most efficient industrial heating solution to suit you.

Heating Your Warehouse This Winter

There are lots of considerations when thinking about your warehouse heating  requirements.
Every year, there are many businesses that use more energy than needed, thereby increasing energy costs. This could be caused by a number of things such as, poor
maintenance, old heating equipment, poor heater design or change of business requirements.
Did you know that heating costs can rise up to 8% for each 1° of overheating?

But what can be done to resolve the issue?

First, an assessment of your current heating system should be performed and the following questions should be asked:
  1. How old is the heater?
  2. Does the heater have a full service history?
  3. Have the requirements of your business changed?

Answers to the above questions could explain why you may be using more energy than needed.

How old is your heater?

If your heater is over a certain age, chances are it could be less efficient. This, combined with higher fuel costs, means higher energy bills. The industrial heating  industry is continually evolving, and higher efficient heaters are now available, with greater fuel and energy saving options.
Does your heater have a full service history?

If you have not kept your maintenance up to date, you could have had some underlying issues that were never detected causing more damage to the heating equipment. Heaters will not operate efficiently unless properly maintained.

Have the requirements of your business changed?

It could be that you have either expanded your business, which means that the current heater is not sufficient to heat the larger space. Or maybe you have partitioned part of the building off and one side doesn’t have a heater, while the other side has an oversized heater.

The environment

The heater’s environment can affect its longevity. For example, if your building is situated near chemical plants, this can have a detrimental effect on your heating equipment.
As stated in the HSE guidelines for temperature in the workplace, the temperature in a warehouse should be no lower than 16 °Celsius or 13 °Celsius if the work is indoors and is of a fast pace.
The best way to assess your need is to have a site survey carried out by a fully qualified gas safe engineer, who can provide you with some information on the most efficient way to heat your premises.
With over 20 years warehouse heating expertise, Heaters Wholesale can provide design, supply and install solutions for your business.

Safety and Comfort in the Workplace

Safety and Comfort in the Workplace

The two things that Heaters Wholesale focus on is the safety and the comfort of all of our valued customers. These are our top priorities.

We only use gas safe registered, and safe contractor approved engineers.

What is the safe contractor register and how does that affect me?

The safe contractor register is a health and safety assessment scheme which was developed to ensure peace of mind that any contractors or engineers that you are using, are competent in the execution of all health and safety aspects of the construction industry including:

Risk Assessments
First Aid
Asbestos removal

The gas safety register was created for your safety. It ensures that the engineers are fully qualified in the use of gas appliances, but there are different forms, some are registered to work on domestic appliances only and some for both Industrial and appliances, you should always expect your engineer to carry their gas safe registration card.

How do you know if they are gas safe registered and qualified to work on your industrial heaters?

Heating engineers should always carry their gas safe registration card with them, and they should present this upon arrival. If they don't then before they carry out any work you should ask to see this. You will be looking for 4 different characteristics on this card which are:

1.       The photograph of the engineer as confirmation that they are who they say they are.
2.       The start date and expiry date. If the card is out of date then the engineers is no longer permitted to work on gas appliances and should not carry out any work on your heating equipment.
3.       Their unique licence number.
4.       Gas safe security hologram logo at the bottom of the card to confirm the authenticity.

If all of the above criteria are not met they are not legally permitted to work on any gas appliances.

Should all of the above be present, you need to check their qualifications to establish that they are qualified to work on your equipment. On the reverse of the card the there is a list of all the relevant qualifications that the individual holds, the start date and the end date of each qualification, ensure that you check these, as they may no longer be valid. The most basic qualification that should be listed on all gas safe cards is pipework, check that this is stated on the card. Engineers that are qualified to work on commercial heating will also be qualified to work on domestic appliance, although each one will be listed separately.

Remember that if an engineer is qualified to work on domestic appliance this does not automatically

Mean that they can work on industrial heaters.

Our engineers are situated throughout the U.K, fully qualified in the installation of warm air heating and radiant heating equipment. We offer site surveys at no cost to yourself, to identify the most efficient and comfortable way to heat your business.

Thermal Comfort for Industrial and Warehouse Heaters

What is Thermal Comfort?

The definition as defined in the British standard BS EN ISO7730  is “That condition of mind that which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.”
So what does this mean?

Thermal comfort is based on each person individually, and occurs when a person is too cold or too hot. This can alter his or her psychological state of mind that could possibly effect his or her concentration and mood. Since you can only really define thermal comfort on a scale of number of employees that complain about temperatures, it’s very difficult to ascertain a comfortable working environment. Although this is the case, regulations state that thermal comfort is achieved when at least 80% of your workforce is comfortable at the working temperature.

Thermal comfort is not only measured by air temperature, but also by radiant temperature, air velocity and convection.

Radiant temperature is a form of heat transfer, made up of three components: reflectance, absorbance and emissivity. Reflectance is when an item receives heat, but does not absorb it, then reflects the heat back into the room. Absorbance is when an item absorbs and retains heat. Emissivity is when retained heat is released back into the room at a steady pace. So for example, if you have a large building with a lot of windows that receive a lot of sunlight, the objects in the room will be heated by the sun and release heat throughout the day. Although this may not be enough to heat a building, it is something that can be taken into consideration when analysing thermal comfort. This is the way in which an infrared radiant heater works.

Convection This is another form of heat transfer that occurs when an item or person picks up warmth from an airstream that travels. For example, through a building, much like how a warm air heating system heats a premises.

Air Velocity- This describes the speed of air moving across the worker that may help cool the worker if it is cooler than the environment.  People can be sensitive to air velocity, as the speed of air moves across the worker it can cool the worker down, if it is cooler than the original environment. A worker’s speed can also alter air velocity, as it increases air movement. For example, if air temperature is cooler than a person’s skin temperature, heat loss by convection is increased. Moving air in warm or humid conditions can increase heat loss through convection without any change in air temperature.

How can you regulate thermal comfort in your premises?

There are many ways in which you can regulate the temperature of your building so that your staff is comfortable with the temperature. Easy solutions include allowing workers to remove layers of clothing or opening of windows during the warmer months. During the winter months, you could consider installing energy efficient heating equipment, such as warm air heaters or radiant heating equipment. For example, when considering warehouse heating, the above must be taken into account in order to provide an adequate industrial heating solution that is efficient and assists in creating thermal comfort. With the installation of any warm air or radiant heater, you can install energy efficient controls. This helps to regulate temperature within the building because they can be timed to operate only when required and only at the required temperature set.

To determine the most efficient heating solution for your building, contact an approved contractor who will visit your site, evaluate the conditions and present equipment that suits you best. Heaters Wholesale can provide you with that information with expertise that covers over two decades, you can be sure that we can provide you with an industrial heating solution to suit you.

The difference between Infrared Radiant Heating and traditional industrial heating methods

Ever since the onset of the industrial revolution  and the beginning of manufacturing, Factory buildings and warehouses' struggled to retain the heat within the premises. Since the development of the of the most basic heating technology, the industrial heating market has evolved and grown from strength to strength.

The case in point is how popular infrared radiant heating has become throughout the years, compared to the traditional warm air heating. They both hold their own attributes, but, depending on the building, infrared heating can represent the most effective heating solution, for factory and warehouse heating.

Many factory premises were built many years ago and although structurally resilient, there was little concern over heat loss as there  was no major thought into energy savings like there are today.

For example, the high ceilings that you often see in many industrial premises tend to lead  to a process  called stratification. This is where the air in the room arranges itself into layers of temperatures, ascending from cold air at the ground level to warmer air towards the ceiling of the building.

By contrast infrared radiant heaters work like the sun which transmits infrared rays into the room, which is then absorbed by the objects and people within the building. This heat is then slowly released over  time allowing the room to remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the day. This can reduce the likelihood of stratification, meaning less heat loss through the roof and a potential saving on your  energy use.

Will Infrared heating suit my building.

Each property will differ, with many factors that can identify whether radiant heaters are the right choice for you. Look around your property do any of  the below apply?

Do you have high ceilings?
Do you regularly use loading bays with open shutters that increase the escape of the warm air.
Are your energy bills excessive?

If you answered yes to any of the above then you may benefit from the installation of radiant tube heaters, and may benefit from a site survey carried out by a fully qualified installer to assess the most efficient way to heat your premises.

Heaters Wholesale will provide you with a free site survey, to determine which heating solution will suit your business.

Radiant Heaters Explained

How Does Radiant Heating Work?

Heating Objects Rather than the Air

Unlike warm air heating that blows out high temperature heated air, radiant heating systems utilise electromagnetic waves to heat people and objects. These waves do not heat the air as they travel through it; instead, it is the objects and people that have absorbed the radiant energy that warm the air via convection as air passes across those warm objects.
These objects then act like heat reservoirs, storing the warmth and releasing it via re-radiation and convection - much like how the Sun heats our planet.

This methodology uses significantly less energy to heat the area at occupant level when compared with more traditional systems, and as there is no need for ceiling fans to push the heat towards the floor, you reduce electricity usage.

Reducing Your Building’s Heat Loss

As radiant heating helps to warm the space at occupant level, heat stratification - which is where the warm air rises to the ceiling - can be significantly reduced. The higher the temperature of the air at ceiling level, the more energy you are losing from your building, so by ensuring you maintain lower ceiling temperatures you can reduce building heat loss, which in turn means you will require less energy to heat the space in the first place.

Radiant heaters are extremely beneficial to greenhouses, garages, workshops, warehouses as well as any other business that utilises shutters or doors that may need to be open for extended periods.
Radiant Heaters are ideal when considering
  • Garden Centre Heating

Alternatively, any other industrial or commercial premises that require doors, or shutters to be open for significant periods throughout the day.

If you would like to find out more about how the radiant heating systems we can supply here at Heaters Wholesale can help to keep your industrial or commercial property warm while saving you money, get in touch with our friendly customer service team that will be happy to arrange your free site survey.

An Introduction to Warm Air Heating

With an increasing amount of economic and environmental pressure being exerted on businesses to both save money and energy, more and more companies are looking for increasingly innovative ways of reducing their electricity and heating bills. We at Heaters Wholesale we can supply a range of commercial warm air heating systems which are a modern and more efficient alternative to traditional water heating systems.

Some of our systems are capable of saving you up to 20% on your business’ energy consumption, so you can view the expenditure on your new heating system as an intelligent, long-term business decision.

So what is Warm Air Heating?

A replacement for the traditional water heating systems, warm air heating is now a popular choice for new installations, particularly thanks to their ability to improve a building’s energy efficiency.
They are a popular choice when considering Factory Heating and Warehouse Heating.

Warm air heaters work by forcing warm air around a building and some of the systems we can supply are able to save up to 20% on energy bills.

If you have space within the corner of your property, which is going unused, why not fit one of our floor standing heaters, such as the “cabinet heater”.

This particular heater is available in either natural gas or LPG, has been designed to provide heat over a long range, and is durable and versatile, whilst also being easy to install meaning our team cause minimum disruption to your working day.

When space is at a premium, our suspended heating systems are highly recommended. Some of our suspended heaters include “compact”, for when space is especially tight.

Both of these heating options are available in either natural gas or LPG, and both promise to provide your industrial building with adequate heat throughout the winter, without costing your business a small fortune in gas bills.

Products from Leading Manufacturers

Of course, all the knowledge in the world would be useless without being able to source the very best in heating equipment. To this end, we can supply heaters from market leading manufacturers including Roberts Gordon.

By working with the most reliable equipment you can rest assured that your heating systems could provide the level of performance that you need.

If you would like more information surrounding our industrial heaters, or if you would like a quote for a particular model, please contact our team today by calling one of the numbers at the top of our website.

Why Businesses in all Sectors Should Install an HVAC System

Here on the Heaters Wholesale blog we are often discussing the various benefits of our heating and ventilation systems and why they make sense for both commercial and industrial environments. Well in this post we’re going to give a quick rundown of all of those reasons for anyone who hasn’t been paying attention, so sit back, relax and prepare to be convinced of the virtues of HVAC.

#1. Maintain consistent environmental conditions

Many of the businesses that operate out of industrial premises require the working environment to be at a consistent level at all times. HVAC can help ensure that the right temperature is maintained be it for worker comfort or to help machinery operate efficiently.

#2. Help improve team morale

Uncomfortable working environments can have a major impact on team morale which can effect the rest of the business. By maintaining a steady temperature you can effectively equip your team with the appropriate clothing.

#3. Boost team productivity

Research shows that happy staff are productive staff, so when you have an effective Warm Air Heating system in place that regulates the working conditions to a comfortable level, you will not only be helping improve morale but also making a direct impact on your bottom line.

#4. Save energy

There is no need to consider the money spent on a brand new HVAC system from us as an expense, as the money you invest will be repaid by the energy you save as a result. It is estimated that our warm air heating system can save up to 20% on your heating costs, while an effective ventilation unit is much more energy efficient than simply leaving windows and doors open.

Warm Air Heating Myths Busted

Myth #1: Warm Air Heaters are not as energy efficient as other industrial heating methods.

Fact: This is not true, every building is individual and the right heating solution will vary from each site. The best way to know is if a highly trained professional conducts a site survey of your property to establish the appropriate equipment for you. Roberts Gordon® provides a wide range of 91% energy efficient warm air heaters, which are available in natural gas/LPG and oil. Floor standing or suspended options are available.

Roberts Gordon® also, offer energy saving controls. The NRG controller maximises fuel savings through self-learning optimisation.

Myth# 2: I have been advised that a floor-standing heater is suitable for my building, but I have no spare floor space.

Fact: It is possible to mount a floor-standing heater horizontally, allowing you to provide the suitable heating whilst preserving your floor space.

Myth #3 Warm air heating technology is outdated, the parts are difficult to replace and engineers do not like to repair them.

Fact: This is not true. Warm air heaters are still the most common form of industrial heating in the U.K; the spare parts are easily sourced from the manufacturers and can be maintained and repaired by fully qualified gas safe engineers.

Myth# 4 I have high ceilings, if heat rises, will I not just be heating the wrong part of the building?

Fact: Just because your building has high ceilings does not mean that warm air heating is not suitable for you. It is possible to install heat de-stratification fans that redirect the heat back to the workspace, creating a comfortable working temperature throughout the day.

The answers should only be used as a guideline and a qualified technician that holds all of the relevant qualifications to work on commercial and industrial heating equipment must be consulted prior to any installation. This is to ensure the safety and design of your installation, as each application is different an individual site survey must be carried out, to create a comfortable and safe environment for you, your staff and your customers.
